I cannot believe that 2023 is almost over. It felt like both the longest and quickest year of my life? Wild to have started this year in a full-time job and scrambling to get the first draft of my cookbook together, to now being a retired restaurant editor who is about to ship her book off to the printers! I am promised a pre-order link in January, so I will be spamming that everywhere once it goes live (apologies in advance).
I also cannot stop thinking about this article from my pal Karen Palmer about why so many LA restaurants are suddenly closing. (RIP in particular to Needle, which I was going to devote a whole future newsletter too because I loved it so much.) It’s a good reminder to support local restaurants you love as much as you can, and that there are ways to support these restaurants that require zero to very little dollars.
How To Support Restaurants for Free
Don’t be an asshole
If you go to dine, please be nice to the staff and to fellow diners, everyone is just trying their best, and even if they aren’t, who cares, shit is hard right now and everyone deserves kindness.If you’re unhappy with something, ask to speak to a manager before blasting a restaurant online
9.9 times out of 10 the restaurant actually gives a shit and wants to fix things or wants to know if something isn’t right or working.Leave a nice review on Google or Yelp
People really do read these things, and ratings matter!Follow them on social media
Truly one of the easiest ways to support.Engage with their social media (in a positive way)
If something looks delicious, comment, “that looks delicious!” or like a photo or reel or Tiktok, or send things that look good to a friend you want to go eat those things with.Bonus: This does cost money but could be cheaper than a meal, which is buy their cool merch or some gift cards or a packaged product if they are selling it.
Gotta support multiple revenue streams.
Okay, now on to today’s guide, which is all about where to have a power breakfast meetings in New York City. For me, a great breakfast meeting spot has comfortable seating, great food, even better caffeine options, and just generally has good vibes (I don’t want to be somewhere stuffy, or somewhere blasé.) There is no reason that breakfast meetings have to be bland!
